Ceiling Retexturing in Tucker, GA

Not every ceiling has to be perfectly smooth. Swapping popcorn for a light, modern texture gets rid of the dated look for less finishing work, and it's kinder to older drywall. We connect Tucker homeowners with experienced professionals who remove popcorn and apply a new texture.

The textures people choose

Knockdown

Compound is sprayed on in drops, left to set for a moment, then flattened with a wide knife. The result is a low, mottled pattern that hides seams and small flaws well. It's the most common replacement for popcorn.

Orange peel

A fine spray that dries to a subtle dimpled surface, like the skin of an orange. It's close to smooth from a distance, a bit more forgiving up close, and easy to keep consistent across a large ceiling.

Skip trowel

Compound is applied by hand in irregular swipes for a handmade, plaster-like look. It suits some craftsman and rustic interiors but is less common on ceilings.

How retexturing is done

  1. Remove the popcorn with the room sealed off.
  2. Repair the drywall: seams, fasteners and gouges. See ceiling repair.
  3. Prime so the texture absorbs evenly.
  4. Apply the texture and let it cure.
  5. Paint: see ceiling painting.

Matching an existing texture

Maybe a previous owner already redid the kitchen with knockdown and you want the bedrooms to match. Show the pro the existing ceiling at the estimate. They can usually adjust the mix, spray pressure and timing to get close. Painted-over textures are the hardest to match exactly.

What affects the price

  • Square footage and ceiling height
  • Drywall repairs needed after removal
  • Texture type and whether it must match another room
  • Whether primer and paint are included

Ceiling Retexturing: FAQ

Is knockdown texture outdated?

It's far less dated than popcorn and is still widely used, especially in newer construction. It's lighter and flatter than popcorn and hides small imperfections well, which is why many homeowners choose it.

Why pick a texture instead of smooth?

Cost and forgiveness. A texture needs less skim coating to look good, and it hides minor dips, seams and future hairline cracks. Smooth looks cleanest but needs more labor to get right.

Can a new texture match the rest of my house?

Often, yes. An experienced finisher can usually get close to an existing knockdown or orange-peel pattern. Exact matches are hardest on older textures that have been painted several times.

Can you spray a new texture over the old popcorn?

Generally no. The popcorn needs to come off, or be flattened and skim coated, so the new texture has a sound, even surface to stick to.

How much does retexturing cost?

It depends on the ceiling after removal, the texture you pick and the room size. For a price, call (678) 716-1062 and we'll connect you with a local pro for a free estimate.

  • Smooth Ceiling Finish (Skim Coat)

Thin coats of joint compound, sanded flat, so the ceiling reads clean under any light.

  • Ceiling Painting

Primer and flat ceiling paint on the new surface, the last step before the furniture goes back.

  • Ceiling Repair

Leak stains, seam cracks, nail pops and sagging panels, whether they started the project or turned up during it.
